I love adding special touches to my handmade cards, something a more than just ink and cardstock, like sewing. Adding sewing and stitching to your cards adds texture and color, it can be simple like sewing around the edges or be the focus of the design. You can use a sewing machine or stitch by hand, you can lay down simple stitches or add intricate embroidery, knots and cross stitch patterns. There’s also lots of paper crafting products on the market like dies that punch the stitching holes for you to make adding sewing easier. Spellbinders is another company that has a lot of terrific stitching dies! Jennifer McGuire used several to create a few amazing cards. She’s posted a very detailed video tutorial showing the basics and more detailed techniques for sewing with these dies, it’s perfect if you’re a newbie. Click here to check it out.
The geometric sewn pattern on this card is the star of the design. I love the beautiful rainbow of stitched colors used! All the card needs is a metallic die cut sentiment to finish it off. I spotted this card on Pocket Full of Happiness on Instagram.
Julia created a FREE digital stamp that you can download, color and add sewing over the lines. It’s a large design that can be cut into pieces to create several cards. She added pretty watercolors to her cards and mounted them on Kraft cardstock with sentiment strips. She’s sharing a tutorial showing how to free-motion stitch with a sewing machine on the Stitches by Julia blog.
