Valentine’s Day Card with Watercolor Powders

February 3, 2020 by Heather Holbrook

Valentine's Day Card with Watercolor Powders

Brusho watercolour powders are a fun and easy way to add bold splashes of color to your card backgrounds. Sprinkle them on watercolor paper and spray or “paint” with water and they will react and spread to create beautiful patterns. You can then layer over stamped images or dies. You can also use them like traditional watercolors to color in images. Kara Lynne used them to create this pretty Valentine’s Day card.

Here are five tips to help you get the most out of watercolor powders when making cards:

  1. Start with a Light Touch
Watercolor powders can be intense, so it’s best to start light and build up the color. Sprinkle a little powder on your card and lightly mist with water. You can always add more if you want a deeper color, but it’s harder to tone down once it’s too dark.
  2. Use a Heat Tool to Speed Up Drying
Watercolor powders can take some time to dry, especially if you’re using a lot of water. To avoid smudging or waiting forever, grab a heat tool! It helps dry your layers quickly, so you can keep going with your project.
  3. Experiment with Texture
One of the cool things about watercolor powders is how they can create different textures. Try sprinkling them on a wet surface for a more blended, soft look or add them to a dry surface for a more intense, crystalline effect. It’s all about experimenting to see what works for your card style.
  4. Mix the Colors
Don’t be afraid to mix different watercolor powders to create custom shades. You can mix them directly on your card for a fun ombre effect, or mix them in a palette before applying. Layering colors also gives your cards more depth and visual interest.
  5. Use It for Stamping
Watercolor powders aren’t just for backgrounds. You can also use them with stamps! Lightly dust your stamp with the powder, then spritz with water to create a soft, watercolor effect when stamped. It’s a simple way to make your stamped images pop.

Have fun experimenting with these tips—you might just discover some new techniques that will make your cards stand out!
