Review: The Coloring Studio Magazine – Summer 2016

June 1, 2016 by Heather Holbrook

Review: The Coloring Studio Magazine Summer 2016

Today we’re going to take a look at the second issue of The Coloring Studio from Stampington and Company. This magazine focuses on the huge trend of adult coloring books. Inside you’ll find over 50 coloring pages from many different artists with a large variety of styles and designs, from whimsical to doodle to realistic. The Coloring Studio is not just a coloring book though, there’s also tons of tips, techniques and inspiration like using different coloring mediums like regular and water color pencils, crayons, water colors, alcohol markers and gel pens. Inside this issue there’s Q & A with some of the artists, how to add gloss shine and dimension, find out why coloring is good for you, how to remove pages and rebind them for your own custom book, coloring on clay and lots more.

Review: The Coloring Studio Magazine - Summer 2016

For my sample projects I decided to go off the page. You don’t have to keep your pages inside the magazine, think about using them on all sorts of projects like collage, cards, home decor projects and scrapbook pages. For my first idea I removed the page from the magazine (carefully with an Exacto knife) and colored it with alcohol based markers, The paper is a good thickness and worked well with the markers. I trimmed the colored page and layered it onto cardstock, adding a stamped sentiment to make a lovely card.

For this next project I scanned and printed this stunning owl image from the magazine onto canvas paper and used a combination of water color pencils and water color crayons to color it. I love the idea of printing these images onto different types of papers, you could try printing on vellum, glossy paper, sticker or magnet paper.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this look at the summer 2016 issue of The Coloring Studio. Look for it on newsstands or directly on-line from Stampington and Company. And be sure to check back soon, we’ll be having a HUGE magazine giveaway including this latest copy of The Coloring Studio!!
