When I’m thinking up ideas for cards I usually start with the main focal point and go from there but it’s really fun sometimes to focus on the card background first, backgrounds can really help tie an entire design together and they can even be the focal point themselves. So I though it would be fun to share some creative card ideas that have fabulous backgrounds.
Underneath each photo will be a link, most will contain products used, tutorials, tips, etc.
This sweet card has a background full of stamped butterflies fluttering around a cute little fox. Take a closer look over at the Marianne Design blog.
This wonderful background was created with large dies, one cut from black cardstock, the other from white with colorful ink blending added. A heat embossed and die cut sentiment is all that’s need to finish off this design. Visit the Hero Arts blog for a video tutorial.
One of my favorite ways to create an easy but beautiful background is with dry embossing, embossing folders used in a manual die cutting machine are so simple to use. Learn more about this butterfly card with embossed background over on the Spellbinders blog.
Stenciling is another great way to create backgrounds. This card has a colorful stenciled background with a coordinating stamped wreath with a vellum layer in-between. Visit the Prairie Paper and Ink blog to watch Amy’s video.
Lots of companies make background stamps which is another easy way to add simple backgrounds. This large swirl stamp from Ellen Hutson will easily fill up a background and you can stamp it in any color of ink to work for so many different occasions. Visit the Ellen Hutson blog for more details about this card.
Kristina used a resist technique for these amazing cards. She heat embossed in gold then added watercolor over top, the embossing resists the color and the pattern shines through. You can visit the K Werner Design blog and watch her video tutorial.
This sweet dog card uses a background die that cuts a paw print pattern into the cardstock, doggie die cuts were then added along with a large sentiment for an adorable card. Visit the Waffle Flower blog for more details.
The absolutely easiest way to create a card background is with pattern papers. There is anything and everything you could image or want on pattern papers out there, or if you just can’t find the right one you can even get digital papers and print them yourself. Pop over to Jennifer McGuire’s blog to see how she used pattern papers in several different ways to create some amazing cards.
This cute walrus scene card has a custom background created with alcohol markers, drawing an iceberg and wintery sky behind the digital stamp. Visit the Just 4 Fun Crafts blog for more info.
Sometimes a nice background and a big sentiment are all that’s needed on a card, this one from Tallie combines, stamping, stenciling and die cutting. Visit the Heffy Doodle blog for more details.
I hope you’ve been inspired to try something new and put a little more focus on your card backgrounds.
